Wanted! Talented Web designer+

My blog has grown up and is moving out of home… Soon it will get a job, find a relationship and never have time to visit.

I now have my own domain (yes yes, mine mine mine… power hungry… taking over the world… bald cat… bwuhahahhaha…etc!).

What that means, though, is that I will no longer have this lovely bloggery blog template and design and setup that makes it pretty and makes actual blogging really easy. It means I need a Web designer who knows what they are doing to put together the new Web site with me.

I can go out into the world and find someone, but I would absolutely love and adore to work with someone who reads this blog, who knows it and who has an interest in it. I figure that there is a pretty high likelihood that one of you, dear readers, has the skills I need and would be interested in working on this with me.

What do I need?
  • Smart, experienced Web designer and developer to bring creative ideas for the layout and design to the table
  • Proven ability with SEO-focussed design and ability to provide sound, practical advice on the same
  • Marketing experience to help create a cohesive Web presence
  • Experience with monetising free content
  • Ability to provide an interface with simple, intuitive content and comment management
  • Ability to import existing posts, including graphics and comments
  • Help with tools for easy (!) ongoing monitoring and management of the Web site
  • Examples of sites you have designed, and references
  • Expertise to advise me on what is required and explain why, not just ‘do what I say’ (I have no expertise in this, I will be relying on you to bring it to the table)

This is something I am very excited about and I would really enjoy working with someone with the same level of joyful enthusiasm (dances of joy at the prospect are not required, but they can add to the overall experience, especially if the dancer is naked).

Interested? Then please email me* with no more than one page describing your experience as it relates to the points above, why you think this would be a fun project, and I would like to hear at least one “must have” idea that you *know* the new site needs.

See… see?! I didn't even know you could do that!

But I do want to make improvements even if I shift the whole lot over as a big shiny package of chronicled goodness. Maybe then the work is just much less… never a bad thing!

It's always good to see the kids move out and get a job because now they get to support YOU for a change.

  3. Hm, you can always set your domain up to forward to this blog, so someone will wite http://www.fernsdomain.com and still end up on this page.

Now I'm not sure about the exact features of blogger, I never used it since it didn't over to vary privacy settings for individual post when I had a look at it.
But even when you want to post other content than your blog you should still be able to implement the blog-part into a frame-homepage someone makes for you.

Exporting everything you wrote and what other people commented on the other hand would probably be a copy&paste orgy.
Also you'd probably loose the feature that people can log in with their Google/LJ/OpenID/etc.-accounts to comment.

Things to ponder, I'd hate to see your blog suffer from webspace moving problems, always love reading your posts.

  4. I have some of the skills you want but not all of them, some free advice I would offer though is play with some of the different CMS and find one that you like using, then hire a developer who is skilled in that system. WordPress is very popular, has many plugins, many people familiar with it, and seems to be pretty easy to use as a blogger.

  5. As a survivor of MBS (multiple blogging syndrome), allow me to offer up some suggestions.

If you're just planning to carry the same content that you've been carrying (i.e., personal blogging with some links and (not enough) pictures of your legs, then the easiest thing would be to simply tell Blogger to point your new paid-for domain to this blog.

The next easiest thing would be to open a free WordPress account, set up a blog with one of their many pretty and customizable themes, and when you've tweaked it enough, allow Blogger to redirect traffic to that account (WordPress will allow you to use your own domain name for a small fee). WP will import the posts and comments from this blog with no problem.

If you're looking to add ads and other commercial links, then somebody could probably customize this blog with available templates. The free WordPress blogs don't allow business things. They also dont' allow Java scripts for cool widgets, but they do provide many of their own.

Finally, if you want something to suck up a *lot* of your free time, you can buy server space for your new name, and spend lots of time and effort installing the WordPress (or some other) software, setting up your widgets, etc.

  6. Very surprised by your forbearance in the skills list.
    Was expecting:

  7. My slave does this, and is OH so good. Lots of examples to show you, even some that are BDSM-related. And he loves to work on dominant women's sites, of course. You know I am on Fetlife and in your friends there – you can find a way to reach him through my profile if you like.

Ok, thank you! I will keep that in mind.

“I'd hate to see your blog suffer from webspace moving problems, always love reading your posts.”

Me too (about the hating the blog to suffer, not about loving to read my own posts!)! I will be very anal about any transition… testing and fussing and retesting and generally being a complete pain in the arse!

    I am asking for a lot, it's true…

“…some free advice I would offer though is play with some of the different CMS and find one that you like using, then hire a developer who is skilled in that system.”

Thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it and will give WordPress a look.

Though you mention 'some of the different CMS' as if I have a clue what the others are and have a clue what they provide. I really don't and I have no interest in researching them myself. I want the person I work with to understand my needs (which I will provide in detail) and to say 'This is the best approach for you, try it', and I will be delighted to do so.

  12. Brids: “Out of curiosity, why do you want your own website?”

Every blogger in the entire world (ok, well maybe only me and a gazillion others) wants to *just* write…

We scribble salacious notes on napkins and stuff them into our bags for later; we gouge our oily palms with sharp-penned secrets; we daydream about how to get *that exact thought* onto the page just like THAT… not that, THAT!; we sift through our memories for things we want to bring into the light and discard them only to pick them up again later and delude ourselves that we can make a nice throw cushion out of that, maybe; we get frustrated when the well runs dry and worry that maybe that is it and there will be no more; we barely listen when people talk to us sometimes because something is niggling in our heads and it won't let go until we get it out; we have moments in our lives where our first thought in the aftermath is “Oh god, how will I ever be able to put this… this… wonder and beauty on the page?!”; we dream of giving up our day jobs and doing what we love…

So, to have a whisper, a glimmer, a skerrick of a hope of doing that (and I don't, really, when I am brutal and honest with myself) I need a space where I have the freedom to try different things to both support this habit and to expand into different areas…

Cryptic and unfocussed as this comment is, it is about as formed as I have it at the moment, and thank you for your question.
